Speed Kills
I learned to drive in icy and snowing conditions while I was living in Wisconsin. Believe me when I tell you that it is very easy to misjudge your speed on a snow covered road. I learned this lesson one Sunday when I was driving back from church after a particularly heavy snow fall. I thought that I was driving slow, but as I drove around a curve in the road the car slid off the road and into a ditch. Fortunately another car came by, and the people helped us push the car out of the ditch, and we were on our thankful way. Not everyone, however, is so fortunate. I remember traveling from Dallas, Texas to Shreveport, Louisiana during a rare snow storm. The driving conditions were treacherous, and literally dozens of cars and trucks had slid off the interstate along that stretch of I-20. So if you must drive during snowy or icy conditions, please drive carefully and watch out for the other guy. Defensive driving is always more important during hazardous road conditions because some people drive as if they are invulnerable. But invulnerability is only possible in video games. In real life recklessness can be fatal. The world is full of people speeding to a Christ-less eternity unaware that a patch of black ice is just ahead. Maybe we can help them gently put on the breaks. If we have learned to slow down to hear the voice of God, then maybe we can help others to slow down and listen. If we have learned to watch out and be careful, maybe we can help others avoid smashing their life on the hard wall of sin.
